Mmm Mmm Monday - State Fair and Kincaid's Hamburgers

This past weekend, we celebrated Kit's birthday at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, while my parents watched Jack and Logan. I think this was Kit's best birthday to date! He was in hog heaven! In addition to all the fried food we could ever eat/imagine, we started the day off watching Texas Tech play Baylor at the Cotton Bowl. Here is a pic of us in the stands.

  
This was actually our third time to attend the Texas State Fair, so we were super excited to try some of our favorite fried foods from years past, as well as the prize winning innovative concoctions new to the fair this year. Here are some pictures of what we enjoyed!

We had a fabulous time! Tech won the game, we ate more fried food than anyone should ever eat in one week, let alone a single day, and on our way back home, knowing that our diet would begin again the following day, we decided to make one last splurge and stop in Weatherford at a kitschy restaurant named, "Kincaid's Hamburgers". 

Kincaid's Hamburgers originally began as the Kincaid Grocery and Market in Fort Worth, Texas back in 1946. O.R. Gentry, who had been the meat cutter since 1947, began cooking hamburgers in 1966 and eventually purchased Kincaid's in 1967. Initially, with one small, used grill purchased for $25, 40-50 hamburgers were sold per day. Most of the customers were from the surrounding neighborhood and students from Arlington Heights High School. They told their parents how good the burgers were, and word began to spread. Business rapidly evolved from a grocery store to a hamburger grill and, in time, most of the shelves were removed to make way for seating. The decor today, however, still reflects the restaurant's beginning with displays of del monte canned food and vintage posters advertising the market's specials in days of yore. 

As we walked up to Kincaid's, we noticed the sign above the door read, "Voted Best Burger by Weatherford Democrat Readers". So, of course we knew we had to order that! We completed our order with a side of fries, a chili cheese dog and banana pudding. Everything was wonderful! The hamburgers are made from the very best U.S.D.A. Choice chuck available. The natural vegetarian-fed, hormone, antibiotic and preservative free beef is cut and ground fresh daily and you can really taste the difference!

If you are ever in Weatherford, stop in for a bite! And don't forget the banana pudding! (They put extra vanilla wafers at the bottom. I love that!) You can also find their other locations in Fort Worth - Camp Bowie, Fort Worth - Hulen, Fort Worth - Alliance, Southlake and Arlington.

AIRSHO gates open at 7:30 both days to allow early bird viewing of the aircraft before flying begins at noon and the Lions Club will be serving breakfast in the main hangar at 7:30 as well. The AIRSHO will begin with the American Airman Hall of Fame (ACAHOF) parade, new colonel ceremony, posting of the colors  and National Anthem. The flying will start at noon. "CAF Retro Show" featuring the Ladies of Liberty and the U.S. Army Band will perform immediately following Saturday's AIRSHO. Also, Saturday's NIGHTSHO begins at 7:45 pm. The NIGHTSHO will feature Matt Younkin's Twin Beech 18 After Dark, and Bob Carlton's Super Salto Jet Sailplane.
 

This year's main attraction, the long awaited return to the skies of the CAF's B-29 "FIFI"! The B-29's flight will include the famous simulated atomic bomb run, which will cause your bones to shake. Speaking of "Shivering your timbers" you will want to stay put to watch the Franklin's Flying Circus in Pirated Skies. A heart thumping wing-walking act set to the tale of a pirates mission to take over the skies.

While at AIRSHO, make sure to visit the TRADESHO, and certainly don't forget to visit "Hangar 57", the official AIRSHO Merchadise Vendor in AIRSHO Square. That's not all, take advantage of free admission to the CAF Airpower Museum and the newly renovated CAF Gift Shop.

Tuesday Tutorial-Batwings

Now that it's October, our Halloween countdown can begin! I think, of all the holidays, Halloween just might be my favorite! We get to go crazy with creativity, dress up in ridiculous outfits, pretend we're people we wish we could be, go door to door collecting candy and we don't have to write thank yous! 

I'm not sure what I will dress the boys up as yet, but as I was looking through old photos, I found a quick, easy and inexpensive costume that I made for them when we attended the Friday, the 13th, baseball game/costume contest. I thought it would be so cute/clever to dress them up as "bat"boys! So the afternoon of the game, I whipped up two sets of batwings. I still can't get over how easy it was! If I ever dress them up as bats again, I will definitely go all out with black onesies and bat ears, but good thing I didn't on that day, because you can really see how great they turned out in this picture! If you're looking for a really easy costume, you should absolutely try this one out! I think it only cost me about $2 per wingset! That is super compared to the $70 costumes selling at Target right now! Here's how you make it...

How To Make Batwings

What You Will Need:

4 (8.5 x 11) sheets of sturdy black felt

4 (6 in) small wooden dowels

Stretch Elastic

Hot Glue

Black Thread and Needle

1. Trace the shape of your batwings onto the black felt and cut them out. You will need 4 wings to make a set, and you can get 1 wing per sheet of felt. 
Do not disregard the scraps! Use the scrap pieces of black felt to cut out two small rectangles.

2. Cut out two strings of elastic the length you will need to fit around the arms of whomever will be wearing the wings. 

3. Tie the strings of elastic into two separate circles and sew them onto the outer edges of two wings where they will eventually meet at the center of your back.

4. Place two wooden dowels so that they are sandwiched inbetween 1 wing with elastic sewn on and 1 wing with no elastic. With the edges lined up, hot glue the wings together. Repeat this process with the other set of wings and dowels. 

5. Now that both the left and right wings are stable, press the center edges together so that the elastic circles meet. Pull the elastic bands out to the sides, and hot glue one felt rectangle on top of the edges of both wings so as to connect them. Flip the wingset over and hot glue the second felt rectangle to connect and cover where the two wings meet.
