Fair Havens Fundraiser

Saturday, as I was pulling out of the Whataburger drive through, I noticed a big commotion across the street, in the parking lot of HEB. High above the crowd, in a motor-powered crane, sat a lone man in a cowboy hat. Below him, huge letters waving across a banner read, "Blogging for Fair Havens... All day. All night. All good."

"What's this?", I thought. A place for fellow bloggers? Or is it some Chris Angel type of stunt? Their scheme had intrigued me. And now you know the answer to the question, "Why did the blogger cross the road?". As I pulled into a spot, I looked in my rear-view mirror, and there was CBS 7's Jay Hendricks balancing numerous cups of lemonade, chasing after my swagger waggon.

Turns out a group of board members and volunteers had come out to raise awareness of an organization here in Midland called Fair Havens. And our local celebrity, Jimmy Patterson, was the man in the cowboy hat, blogging from above.

Down below, in a blue tent, attempting with no avail to shelter us all from the sweltering heat, I found my haven! A table full of homebaked goodies and literature about Fair Havens.

There I met many kind people educating me about this place that, in no better words than their own, "serves as a place of refuge and restoration for single mothers as they prepare to make a better life for themselves and their children." The history and success stories of this refuge are absolutely breathtaking and humbling. Please check out their website to learn more and find out how you can help! A big thank you to all those who came out yesterday to volunteer their time and to all those who are helping our community everyday!
