The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

A hilarious tale of overachievers' angst, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee relays a story of the unlikeliest of heroes. Six quirky kids in the throes of puberty overseen by three equally quirky adults enter a spelling competition, vying for the title of a lifetime. This charming group of outsiders learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

Recommended for those 12 and up due to language and adult situations.

Permian Basin Fair and Expo

Music, carnival rides, food, ranch rodeo events, exhibits and special events add up to the 35th Annual Permian Basin Fair and Exposition, set for Friday through Sept. 18 at Odessa's Ector County Coliseum.

This year's carnival includes, among other rides, the Hurricane, Kamikaze, Tilt-A-Whirl, Spin Out, Tornado, Himalayan and the Mega Ferris Wheel. Special events feature a garden tractor pull, an antique tractor and pick-up truck pull, a 4-H fashion show, an agility show and a demolition derby that pays $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $300 for third place.

Entertainment features, among others, Johnny Cooper, Mark McKinney, The Bart Crow Band, Rio Grand, Brian Milson, Noel Olivas, Billy Hendrix Experiment, The Shades, Black Eye Shiner, G6, Three Lit Pigz, JD & The Albright Band, Realidad, River of Life and Sabor y Ritmo. And back by popular demand is Tina Winn the Galaxy Girl, who will be performing acrobatics 12 stories over the fair grounds.

High School Football
September 10 & 11, 2010

* The Midland Lee High School Rebels will take on Palo Duro at home this week during their 3rd game of the season. Come out to the Grande Communications Stadium at 7:30 to cheer them on! 


* In their 4th game of the season, the Midland High School Bulldogs will be playing Lubbock Coronado in Lubbock at 7:30 pm

* Odessa's Permian High School will battle it out on September 11 against Cedar Hill (Abilene) in Odessa at 1:00. Go support those Panthers and get your mojo on!

* The Bronchos of Odessa High School will travel to the Dick Bivins Stadium of Amarillo on Thursday, September 9th to play Amarillo Tascosa. This is their 3rd game of this season. Go out and encourage your team!

* Midland Christian High School will travel to Monahans for their 3rd game at 7:30 pm. Root for the Mustangs as they take on the Loboes this Friday!

As Mother Nature begins to display an palette of vibrant fall hues, 85 artists set up booths beneath the shade of the turning leaves on the grounds of the Museum of the Southwest to showcase equally colorful canvases and handmade jewelry that sparkles in the sunlight during a two-day ode to autumn.
